The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the Harry Potter of Greek mythology!! This is not meant to slight either author, but rather a compliment to them both because I believe they have both produced highly readable and entertaining book series that will encourage reading in all ages.

This story was fast paced and fun, with great characters and fantastic bits of ancient stories meeting modern times. I can't wait to dive into the next book of the series!

Recommended Read - The Round House by Louise Edrich

The Round HouseThe Round House by Louise Erdrich
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A poignant coming-of-age story flavored with the rich and often painful history of the Native American struggle in the United States. When I was in college I had the opportunity to work closely with some amazing Native Americans whose stories were loosely echoed here - stories of poverty and injustice over shared fry bread. I felt just as deeply for the characters in this story as I did for my friends in real life, and it was an appropriate book to begin reading on V-Day.
There were a few slow parts that left me slightly bored, but overall it was a beautiful and soulful story.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This wonderful story is about the strong relationship that humans can have with their dogs, and about appreciating their instincts. It was fast-paced and mysterious, with a story that was a haunting look back over life, similar to Water for Elephants. It did get a little confusing and weird for a minute in the middle but otherwise it was a compelling and interesting read!

Sorta Recommended Read: The Awakening by M. L. Lacy

The Awakening (Chrysalis #1)The Awakening by M.L. Lacy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this particular novel. There were some particularly brilliant thoughts (love) and the underlying storyline was great (love). But, it was clouded over by overly-blatant and totally rampant, incestuous sex (hate). There were also several editing errors throughout that caused me reading stumbles, which really frustrate me (hate). The plot was fast and exciting (love), but the main heroine was super wishy-washy between being a strong person and being nothing more than some wimpy thing who has no purpose outside of men (hate).

Overall, I'm undecided as to whether or not I would continue reading this series.
